Freddie Roach has been on fine form ahead of his fighter Manny Pacquiao's November 13th showdown with Antonio Margarito for the vacant WBC light middleweight title, and predicted that his charge would finish the much taller Mexican within 8 rounds.

Given the size difference between the 5,6 Pacquiao and the 5,11 Margarito, that's an ambitious prediction to make, especially given Margarito's well earned reputation for absorbing punishment. Not to mention that Margarito will be trying to come in as big as he possibly can on top of that, and could well be stepping into the ring somewhere closer to super middleweight rather than junior middleweight if he cuts weight the right way.

Roach's prediction was made sitting face to face with Margarito and his trainer Robert Garcia, during HBO's face off with Max Kellermen, and seemed to get under Margarito's skin, who replied with:

"What does he see he crippled or something?"

Roach without missing a beat simply replied: "I saw your last two fights"

To which there was really nothing Margarito could say in return. His last fight was a somewhat lackluster decision against the clearly over-matched Roberto Garcia, and before this he was famously battered over nine rounds by Shane Mosley, being stopped for the first time in his career.

Margarito's trainer Robert Garcia, speaking to John Martinez of BoxScoreNews, predictably differed in his prediction for the fight, instead opting for an 11th round stoppage in Margarito's favor. He also added:

"This isn't going to just be a win for Margarito, this is going to be a f**king beatdown we put on him. A bigtime beating is what we got for Manny Pacquiao."

Which seems to differ from Garcia's talk of trying to outbox Pacquiao only a few months ago. So what kind of approach Margarito will be taking will have to remain to be seen for the time being, but most picking him to win have done so expecting to see the Margarito of old rather than him keeping Pacquiao on the end of his jab.

Some of Roach's predictions are undoubtedly made in order to rile up his fighter's opponent, which works more often that you might expect. This time though, the bookmakers are agreeing with him, and most odds sites have Pacquiao winning by knockout as the most likely outcome.

Margarito wasn't the only one on the receiving end of Freddie Roach's wit this week though, he also had some choice words for his stable's increasingly beleaguered rival Floyd Mayweather.

Speaking to DaTruthBoxing prior to his trip to the Philippines to train Manny Pacquiao, Roach was asked about what has probably become a familiar topic over the last couple of years, his star pupil fighting Floyd Mayweather. His response was:

"Mayweather's busy beating up girls"

When asked about the possibility of a fight occurring in the future, Roach said:

"Who knows with him, he's so sporadic, he's here, he's there, he's negotiating, he's not negotiating"

A response from Floyd himself is probably not on the cards on this occasion due to his current legal predicament, but should Floyd Sr get wind of Roach's remarks, an at least amusing response will undoubtedly be forthcoming.

Pacquiao Watch: Assessing Margarito’s chances

World pound for pound boxing king Manny Pacquiao is a prohibitive favorite against Mexican Antonio Margarito, with whom he will do battle for the alphabet soup World Boxing Council super welterweight crown on November 13 (November 14 in the Philippines).

Although Margarito is taller, bigger and arguably the harder puncher, his last two fights suggest he may no longer be the feared boxer he once was.

Pacquiao, on the other hand, has been on a roll, piling up 12 straight victories since losing to Erik Morales in 2005 while continually moving up in weight.

Pacquiao also morphed from a whirlwind knock-out puncher into a more complete boxer while still retaining his explosiveness as well as crowd pleasing style.

While the Filipino southpaw, who is now member of Philippine Congress, is known for his aggressiveness, he has also managed to develop an underrated defense such that no opponent has really tagged him with four or five punch combinations at a given time during this incredible stretch.

Since moving up in weight as a full-blown featherweight, Pacquiao also has never been knocked down, even against the heaviest punchers in the weight classes where he toiled and earned his keeps.

Margarito, however, is a unique challenge for Pacquiao if the Filipino is to keep that unblemished record during the last five years.

For one, Margarito, along with Miguel Cotto, is one of the couple of boxers that current pound for pound rival Floyd Mayweather Jr had avoided. Pacquiao already stopped Cotto who was also KOed by Margarito. Margarito, however, has yet to erase the stigma of being called a cheat for trying to load up his hand wraps in his fight with Shane Mosley. For that, he was suspended for one year and his comeback fight against Robert Garcia in May this year was far from impressive.

But Margarito could quickly turn the tables around if he manages to pull an “upset” against Pacquiao. He certainly has the tools to shock the boxing world.

If Margarito can manage to land stinging jabs, which he must double or triple up, he may able to set up his powerful right against Manny. Pacquiao is also not used to being bullied around and it is important for Margarito to establish his dominance in the early rounds and go for a knockout inside the first half of the fight. With Pacquiao, you simply have to take your chances because Manny will come charging at you, but won’t be there at the blink of an eye once he's done breaking you down slowly. That’s how quick and speedy Manny is.

Or if you wish, you may lay a trap against Manny by waiting for him to commit and then throw counterpunches in bunches. The only fighter who came close to knocking down Manny using this technique was Juan Manuel Marquez. I doubt however if Margarito can load up his punches as quick Marquez does.

You also need to give Manny different angles and see to it that you can avoid his onrushing style.

It is important to upset Manny’s rhythm if you want to pull an upset. The last man to do that was the 2005 version of Erik Morales, but only because Manny suffered a huge gash over his right eye - caused by a head butt, by the way - which affected the Filipino’s vision.

It will take a boxer that has the combined skill set of a prime Erik Morales and Juan Manuel Marquez to finally end Manny’s winning streak.

Margarito, however, is simply too old to learn new tricks. Margarito will be his old self when he faces Pacquiao in November. He will be an aggressor and will come charging forward – a bad strategy against Manny who throws powerful punches from weird angles.

If Margarito does that, I will have to agree with Pacquiao's coach Freddie Roach that the Mexican will look like a younger Oscar de la Hoya against Manny Pacquiao. And he will suffer the same fate as the man described by Roach as the one who can’t pull the trigger anymore.

Margarito "Training Like A Monster Right Now"

With a mega world title fight between Pacquiao and Margarito on the fast-approaching November horizon, it's getting close to put-up-or-shut-up-time for these two warriors that will step into the squared circle. Or to quote what Roger Mayweather said to me a couple days ago, "It ain't about what you say you can do . . . it's about what you will eventually do and prove."

On November 13, broadcasting live on HBO PPV, Manny Pacquiao will go for a record eight titles in as many weight divisions when he squares off against the dangerous and former world champion Antonio Margarito for the coveted WBC junior middleweight title belt from Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

"He's (Antonio Margarito) training like a monster right now," said Robert Garcia (Margarito's trainer) before boldly predicting to me his fighter would win with an, "11- Round knock out."

He's not the only one that now believes Margarito will be the victor on November 13. "If Margarito keeps Pacquiao cornered and throws uppercuts along with roughing him up on the inside, Margarito should knock his ass out," said Roger Mayweather (undefeated former world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s Uncle and trainer).

Mayweather added, " Manny can't be allowed in the middle of the ring; if Margarito wants this, he's gonna have to work him on the ropes and get him there with lots of jabs and pushing and shoving him and oh yeah, it also helps if Manny aint got that sh*t in his system."

When this fight was first announced, I agreed with what Dan Rafael (ESPN.com) now describes this fight as being, "not enough to make the fight with 'Cheato' all that attractive."

However, now I believe Rafael and others sharing his view are just ignorant and short sighted about whats to come.

If war is the place for evil, then on November 13th Cowboys Stadium will be the Devil's playground where these two warriors will do the evil that men do to one another.

Make no mistake about it; these two combatants are going to fight like dogs of war. Not even the rabid Filipino fight fans (who on occasion let their blind loyalty get in the way of sometimes sound judgment) would disagree that neither fighter will ever be known as a well rounded pugilist; rather, what they are and will definitely display on November 13 is their renowned reputations for brutally assaulting their opponents with malicious intent.

I thoroughly believe that Margarito is a live horse in this match up. He is longer, leaner,bigger, and more importantly, focused on this task of beating Manny Pacquiao.

"We've been watching a lot of Manny's fights and know exactly how to attack him. Right now Manny is considered "The Man", but he's also kinda overlooking us," said Garcia.

"We have been especially interested in his fights with (Miguel)Cotto and (Juan Manuel)Marquez."

It should be noted that in the Cotto fight, though Manny won, he suffered a busted eardrum and took heavy shots to the head. After the fight, he looked just as beat up as Cotto did and Cotto is far smaller than Margarito.

Right after Garcia said this to me, he looked at me with a cold demeanor and emphatically claimed, "This isn't going to just be a win for Margarito, this is going to be a f**king beatdown we put on him (Pacquiao). A bigtime beating is what we got for Manny Pacquiao."

Consider this?

Antonio Margarito was cast aside ever since his hands were found to have been illegally wrapped by his former trainer, Javier Capetillo, on the night he was facing Shane Mosley in January 2009.

He served a suspension that lasted well over a year and his comeback fight was a ten- rounder against a nondescript fighter named Roberto Garcia from Texas which left many people wondering if Margarito was finished.

How lucky can Margarito be now?

Getting the assignment to face Manny Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather Jr. is the equivalent of hitting the Powerball Lotto in boxing.

Margarito, in my opinion, isn't going to let this chance pass him by. There's no way Antonio lets this opportunity skate by him by letting the wind blow his golden ticket out of his hands before he can cash it in.

In an interview I did with Freddie Roach, Pacquiao's trainer, he told me he wasn't all that confident about picking Margarito as Manny's next opponent.

"Well at first, I wasn't, and to some degree, even now that comfortable with fighting Margarito, but Manny wanted this fight and I saw how he handles some other big guys and so I went with it, but those other guys aren't Antonio Margarito."

Roach continued, "Antonio brings size and power, but he also knows how to box and use his jab when he's focused and I believe he's focused for this fight against Manny; he has to be."

In fact, Robert Garcia told me that come fight night, "Antonio will probably rehydrate about twelve pounds."

Roger Mayweather added, "Look, Manny fights at weights that are in between recognized weight divisions like 143 instead of 140 or 147."

"It's like a lot of people say my nephew is scared of Manny. Really? Lil Floyd fought Oscar De La Hoya at 154, but Oscar came into the fight at around 165. Oscar never hurt my nephew. Floyd out-boxed and outgunned Oscar that night so what is there to be scared of from Manny Pacquiao when they fight at 147?

If Manny fights Floyd at 147, he's gonna get the same that 41 others before him got-a loss. Manny can't outbox or out think my nephew in the ring. He doesn't have my nephew's head movement, defense, or hand-speed. He just moves forward with very little side to side movement. He's gonna get his ass whooped by Floyd, but before that, if Margarito can keep the fight chest to chest and Manny on his heels, then Margarito should be able to lean on him and use his weight and strength to wear Pacquiao's legs down."

I think that strategy rings true. The problem with that is, Manny and Freddie can come up with a plan to counter that. But it's the intangibles that make this fight a dangerous one for Manny.

When Antonio Margarito enters the ring in November, he will slide through the ring ropes looking to prove something. His name and record will be introduced from the dramatic bellowing of Michael Buffer's voice only to be drowned out by the crowd's serenading of boos and cat-calls as his body of work is and has been questioned since the Mosley fight.

So what does he fight for? Probably not the green belt. He's probably fighting for pride, restoration of his name, and family.

These are three things Freddie can't strategize for and Manny can't hit with blazing speed and rapid power. These intangibles come from the hearty and mind and like Shane Mosley and Oscar De La Hoya did in June of 2000, Margarito is going to go "soul searching."

Kelly Ferguson, a former Army boxer and strategist added this:

"It's not what you say you're gonna do, it's about how you do what you said you'd do when it comes time to do it."

Well on November 13, Mayweather and Ferguson along with the "millions watching from around the world" will see just what Pacquiao and Margarito have as they set out to prove that their actions will speak louder than their words.

In a side note of silliness, according to Rhonda Lee, meteorologist from KXAN in Austin, Texas, Freddie Roach may have misspoke when he valiantly stated that. "the tornado(Margarito) has been downgraded to a tropical storm" because though taking a direct hit from a tornado is very devastating and lethal, a lingering tropical storm would cause severe flooding, damage, and bring torrential rains which could prove to be fatal and most definitely be very destructive.

Perhaps the miscalculations in the Pacquiao camp has already begun, eh?

Lastly, be on the look out for hot junior welterweight prospect Jesse Vargas as he next enters the ring on September 30 at the Club Nokia in Los Angeles. Sporting a record of 11 and 0 with six wins by way of knock out, this fighter has his trainer gushing with pride.

" He's got hand speed, great defense, and has been fighting guys weighing 170 pounds and outclassing them."

"He's an all around well schooled fighter and he IS the next big thing in boxing," said his trainer Roger Mayweather.

"Also, light middleweight, Omar Henry. He's undefeated with 10 wins and 8 of them by KO." "He's got speed and power and people will definitely be seeing more of him."

I agree. Omar Henry was trained for a good while by my good friend, Jay Johns out of Savannah's Boxing Gym in Houston, Texas.

If Henry is improving under the tutelage of Mayweather, it's because Jay Johns created the ferocity, technique, and foundation for Omar Henry first.

For this, Roger Mayweather owes Johns.

Bandito Margarito has everything to gain, nothing to lose against Pacquiao

On January 21 of 2009, Antonio Margarito lost via ninth round TKO at the hands of Shane Mosley. It was the only time in his career he was ever stopped.

His lack of success with Mosley has been used as a gauge to predict how he will fare against Pacquiao, but there are a few significant differences that should be noted.

Prior to the Mosley fight, it was discovered by Mosley’s trainer, Nazim Richardson, that plaster of Paris objects had been inserted into Margarito’s handwraps. His hands were rewrapped, and the fight went on as scheduled.

The psychological aspect of boxing is extremely important. On that night, Margarito knew that he was in big trouble for what had just occurred. It’s a dangerous thing for any boxer to enter the ring when he isn’t focused on the task at hand. Margarito was at a very significant psychological disadvantage, and Mosley capitalized fully.

The boxer was suspended for fighting in the United States for one year before being denied a license by the California State Athletic Commission.

Texas, which had already been selected as the state that Pacquiao – Margarito would take place, granted Margarito’s appeal for a license.

Pacquiao has stated that he believes that Margarito knew that he had the little surprises in his handwraps. Most boxing fans agree with Pacquiao’s opinion.

Now that Margarito is set to face Pacquiao on November 13 at Cowboys Stadium, he has everything to gain.

The much bigger man will be physically and mentally prepared, and he will give it everything he has in his attempt to upset the Pound-for-Pound king. He will undoubtedly consider a win over the world’s greatest fighter to be his first step toward redemption.

Dale Pippin of Seligman believes that Margarito’s size and power could create problems for Pacquiao.

“He could beat Pacquiao. He’s a lot bigger, and he has a puncher’s chance,” Pippin said.

Margarito is known to have a granite chin, and good power. He’ll most likely come to the ring weighing at least 10 lbs more than the Pacman.

It would be foolish for any pundit to neglect to factor Margarito’s height, reach, toughness and mental and physical conditioning into the equation. He's going to want a win, and he's going to want it badly.

A multitude of great fighters have come to the ring fully confident that they had everything it would take to beat the Filipino warrior, only to be completely overwhelmed by Pacquiao’s speed, power and angles.

Margarito’s resilience and willingness to slug toe-to-toe should make for an exciting fight, but whether he can make it a competitive fight for more than a few rounds remains a question.

Margarito a punching bag for Manny?

MANILA, Philippines - Two-time world boxing champion Gerry Peñalosa said yesterday there’s no way Mexican warrior Antonio Margarito will defeat Manny Pacquiao in their 12-round bout for the vacant WBC superwelterweight title at the Cowboys Stadium on Nov. 13 because the Filipino icon is just invincible at his prime.

“It’s Manny’s time,” said Peñalosa. “He’s the world’s No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter. Nobody can beat him in his division. The key is his quickness. I don’t think Margarito can touch him. He’s too slow for Manny. I’m not worried about his height. Manny has beaten fighters who were taller than him, like Oscar de la Hoya. Manny will turn Margarito into a punching bag.”

Peñalosa said because Margarito will likely enter the ring outweighing Pacquiao by 10 pounds, he may not go early although it’s a possibility.

“You can’t underestimate Margarito,” said Peñalosa who’s deep in training for his Oct. 10 farewell appearance against Thailand’s Yodsaenkeng Kietmangnee in Zamboanga City. “He’s big and tough. But Manny’s a volume power puncher who doesn’t get tired. I think Margarito will get knocked out or the fight will be stopped in the late rounds, between nine and 12 but if Manny catches him early, I wouldn’t be surprised if he stays down. Margarito is perfect for Manny because he likes to come forward. I can just see what will happen. Pupulbusin ni Manny si Margarito. It’s hard to predict what round it will end but you can be sure Margarito isn’t going to win.”

Peñalosa said he will be at ringside for the fight. A slot has been reserved for his superfeatherweight protégé Michael Farenas in the Pacquiao-Margarito program. Farenas will take on Korea’s Jung Hoon Kim in the Peñalosa-Yodsaenkeng undercard and if he wins convincingly, his reward will be a trip to Dallas. Farenas stopped Indonesia’s Simson Butar Butar at 2:19 of the second round in his most recent outing in Mandaluyong two months ago.

“I’m confident Manny will beat Margarito,” said Peñalosa. “Manny will be ready for a hard fight. Whatever Margarito brings to the ring, Manny will be able to handle. I don’t think Margarito has the ability to stop Manny from moving. He’s Manny’s kind of opponent because he’ll go in there to engage, not like (Joshua) Clottey. We’ll see an exciting, action-packed fight.”

Peñalosa, 38, was offered to fight Mexican Olympian Abner Mares in the Sugar Shane Mosley-Sergio Mora undercard at the Staples Center in Los Angeles last Saturday but turned it down.

“My dream was to retire a world champion,” he said. “Fighting Mares wouldn’t get me closer to making my dream come true. I wanted (Fernando) Montiel or at least a warrior like Jorge Arce but the big-name fighters stayed away. I don’t know why they’re avoiding me.”

With time catching up on Peñalosa and a world title shot nowhere in the horizon, Peñalosa decided to end his career in a fight that he will produce for TV on Oct. 10 with the assistance of Zamboanga Rep. Erbie Fabian. Peñalosa will not receive a purse for the fight, in the traditional sense; instead, he acquired the TV rights.

“This is definitely my last fight and I want to make it meaningful by giving the earnings to Z Gorres,” said Peñalosa, referring to the Mandaue contender who survived a brain operation in Las Vegas last year and is now undergoing occupational therapy in Cebu. “Sen. Lito Lapid is supporting the project. We want to help our boxers after their careers are over. We are timing our project with the celebration of the fiesta of Nuestra Senora La Virgen del Pilar in Zamboanga City.”

Another Filipino favorite in the undercard is lightweight Jimrex Jaca who battles Korea’s Jong Yoon Choi.

Peñalosa is coming off back-to-back losses to Juan Manuel Lopez in Aguascalientes, Mexico, and Eric Morel in Las Vegas. He has figured in only four fights the last 2 1/2 years. Before losing to Lopez in April last year, Peñalosa had won three in a row, including a dramatic seventh round disposal of Mexico’s Jhonny Gonzalez for the WBO bantamweight belt. His record is 54-8-2, with 36 KOs.

Yodsaenkeng, 22, was only nine months old when Peñalosa turned pro in 1989. The former WBC Youth lightflyweight titleholder, nicknamed “The Robot,” has never been beaten by a Filipino, defeating the three whom he has met – Niño Suelo, Robert Rubillar and Richard Garcia. His record is 12-2, with eight KOs.

“I love boxing,” said Peñalosa. “It’s my life. But I also want to spend more quality time with my wife Goody and two kids. I’ve decided to finally retire and my farewell fight will be against Yodsaenkeng for the benefit of Gorres. It’s the best way I know how to end my career.”

Manny, why not build Pacquiao Boxing Gym now?

FREDDIE Roach has his Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles, California.

The late, lamented Gabriel “Flash” Elorde has his Elorde Boxing Gym through his wife, Laura. It has branches all over Metro Manila.

And what about Manny Pacquiao?

None. Nada.

No Pacquiao Boxing Gym in Manila, in Cebu, in Davao, in Baguio, in Bacolod, in Cagayan de Oro, in Sarangani, or even in his hometown GenSan.

Pacquiao usually trains at the Wild Card Gym when in LA.

He now trains at the Elorde Boxing Gym for the Antonio Margarito fight in November at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

He has picked the Elorde Boxing Gym branch in Quezon City, not far from Congress, because he says he doesn’t want to absent himself from his brand-new job as congressman from Sarangani Province.

He plans, though, to motor up shortly to Baguio for the majority of his training for the Margarito bout set Nov. 14 (Manila Time).

Although the clash is at a catch weight 151 lb, Pacquiao and Margarito will slug it out for the World Boxing Council super welterweight crown (154 lb).

Nowadays, catch weight fights have become a dozen a dime, a worldwide fad after Pacquiao crashed into the scene ballooning from one weight to another a la Incredible Hulk.

No fighter since beak-busting was invented has come closer to what Pacquiao has achieved: From a skinny 106-pounder in 1996, he has expanded to 147 to become the only boxer ever to capture seven world titles in seven different divisions.

A win over Margarito—which isn’t far-fetched as, this early, Pacquiao has been installed the 5-1 favorite—would make Manny an eight-time world champion.

I don’t know of anyone today who could even come close to surpassing that, or equaling the feat. Not in this millennium, I guess.

Anyway, about that gym Pacquiao needs to train on each time he has a fight coming.

Why doesn’t he build his own and name it The Pacquiao Boxing Gym?

To one as wealthy as Pacquiao, he might even build not just one but two, three or even four gyms in Metro Manila. Better yet, he should put up one each in the major cities in the country.

He’d surely help reduce the nation’s unemployment problem. Retired boxers could work as his gym trainers.

This brilliant idea isn’t mine but Ricky Sadiwa’s.

Ricky is an ardent Pacman fan, who does gym boxing regularly for exercise. Ricky, an IT expert, has considerably trimmed down his frame since he picked up the sport some weeks back.

For Reli de Leon, though, the expert marketing man, a Freddie Roach Boxing Gym in the country might be a better idea.

“It sure would even appeal to the AB crowd, Al,” he said.

I believe him. That would be grist for another future column.

Meanwhile, for his idea, Ricky, if ever Pacquiao finally decides to put up a Pacquiao Boxing Gym, has one request: “If I put up my own Pacquiao Boxing Gym, I pray that Mr. Pacquiao waives the franchise fee?”

If only for your idea, that’s not too much to ask of Pacman, I guess.

And I’ll even lawyer for you, Ricky.

To begin with, to a billionaire like Manny, the franchise fee will just be a drop in the bucket.

He’ll even be present to cut the ribbon during the inaugural opening of your brainchild.

Playtime Over for Pacquiao as Roach, Sparmates Arrive

MANILA, Philippines – Playtime for Manny Pacquiao is over.

Top trainer Freddie Roach arrived in Manila early Sunday morning from Los Angeles accompanied by a pair of mean-looking junior-middleweights who will lend a hand in Pacquiao’s buildup for the Nov. 13 showdown with Antonio Margarito.

“We’re going to train tomorrow (Monday),” Roach told the Bulletin as soon as he emerged from a throng of well-wishers and fellow passengers at the Centennial Airport.

Roach came in with Glen Tapia (from the Dominican Republic) and Michael Medina (Mexico), who will be the other half of sparring partners that would also include Vanes Martirosyan (Armenia) and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (Mexico).

Tapia has a 7-0 record with five knockouts, while Medina has a 24-2 mark with 19 stoppages.

“We’re looking forward to working with Manny Pacquiao,” said Tapia, who got Roach’s attention as he shadow-boxed while waiting for their hotel keys at the lobby of the New World.

Martirosyan and Chavez Jr., son of the legendary Julio Cesar Sr., are expected to hit town anytime this week in time for the start of training camp in Baguio City, according to Roach.

Roach said Rashad Holloway, who was tapped when Pacquiao revved up for Oscar De La Hoya in 2008, will be utilized once Pacquiao and the celebrated cornerman return to the familiar confines of the Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood in the third or fourth week of October.

Roach had wanted to proceed immediately to Baguio City but Pacquiao’s adviser Mike Koncz said the pound-for-pound king plans to send a few more days or the rest of the week in Manila before going up to the City of Pines.

Baguio had been used by Roach and Pacquiao as training camp when they were preparing to face Miguel Cotto at around the same time last year.

Last week, Pacquiao trained briefly at the Elorde Gym on Del Monte Ave. in Quezon City before returning to General Santos City for a brief R&R.

Already in the country since last week is Alex Ariza, the revered conditioning coach and nutritionist of Pacquiao.

Pacquiao disappoints Texas fans

FILIPINOS in the Rio Grande area of Texas were very disappointed over the last-minute cancellation of a fund-raising dinner which was supposed to be graced by boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao.

The $250-a-plate dinner on Saturday at the McAllen Convention Center was cancelled after the congressman from Saranggani advised organizers that he would not be able to make it.

“No reason was given, we were left to guess,” said former sportswriter Chito Sagana of nearby Edinburgh, Texas, in an overseas phone call. He had bought tickets for him and his nurse-wife Janice to the Sept. 18 affair.

“We are all wondering if he had work to do in Congress, if the $250,000 appearance fee was not adequate, or if there was a loophole somewhere because it was not him who signed the contract with the Filipinos here,” Chito said.

“Pacquiao said the dinner with him will be moved to November, most likely after his fight with Antonio Margarito in Dallas, Texas.”

I was curious to know how PBA executive secretary Ma. Corazon “Coy” Perez, who has served under three different commissioners in the past eight years, would describe and rate each one of them.

Since the founding of the PBA in 1975, the league has had only two executive secretaries. The first was Linda Vergara, who was brought to the league from the now-defunct Micaa by the first commissioner, Leo Prieto.

Coy replaced Linda eight years ago, when Noli Eala became commissioner, and served the entire length of his boss’ five-year tenure. She stayed on to work with Sonny Barrios for three years, and is now getting to know her new boss Chito Salud.

So how does Coy describe each of the three commissioners?

“Basically a marketing person, commissioner Noli’s thrust was on how to sell the league. He initiated a highly successful program called ‘Gimme 5’ which enabled the public to watch the games live by paying only P5 for a seat in the general admission section.”

According to Coy, it was also during Noli’s term that the PBA board discussed the league’s participation in the formation of the Philippine national team.

“Commissioner Sonny Barrios, being the very responsible family man that he is, ran the PBA as successfully and as lovingly as he did his domestic affairs. During instances where he had to arbitrate between two feuding parties, commissioner Sonny would make sure he listened carefully to both parties, never letting either one feel that he is wrong.

“He adopts the same stance also when sitting in during a player’s summons. He talks to the players like a father—may sermon, pero parating may lambing. It got to a point that his associates started to caution him because because he would often waive fines imposed on players.

In Chito Salud’s first two weeks in office, Coy said the office staff already felt his high-voltage energy.

“He is into several things all at the same time: marketing, officiating, administration, all aiming for reforms, in the hope of making the league more attuned with the times.

“Commissioner Salud has a no-nonsense air about him. We work—as in WORK, from 9 to 6. When he has a meeting, he is in the boardroom 10 to 15 minutes ahead of everyone else.”

For a man like Chito, who has great plans for the league, I guess that’s the only way to do it. He aims to make the game more exciting to spectators, at the same time endeavoring to keep officiating as spotless as possible.

Chito, 48, hopes to develop a new breed of superstars during his tenure, in an effort to bring back the golden days of the PBA.

Indeed, those were the days when tickets to a Ginebra game were as rare to find as diamonds.

“Yes, we will try to bring back those glory days,” said Chito.

Manny Pacquiao vs Antonio Margarito: Early Fight Predictions: News Roundup

With still over two months until Manny “The Mexicutioner” Pacquiao steps into the path of the “Tijuana Tornado” at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas predictions have been starting to roll in.

Most see the fight going the way of Pacquiao.

Ted “The Bull” Sares of Bad Left Hook sees the fight as a back and forth battle with the speed of Pacquiao trying to find openings around the heavy hands of Margarito. Ultimately, Sares sees the speed catching up to Margarito and a late Pacquiao victory.

“Speed will be the critical variable in this fight, Sares wrote. “And Manny has the speed (and skills to go with it). But before he prevails with a 10th or 11th round stoppage, he will be rocked several times by a stalking Margo using his heavy hands. Around the 7th or 8th, I see a facially bruised and puffed up Manny finally asserting himself but not nearly as easily as he did with Cotto.”

There are also those writers who are not only predicting a tough fight for Pacquiao but also envisioning the upset.

Chuy Marco of Now Boxing sees the fight playing out similar to Margarito’s fight against Miguel Cotto, a match which started strongly for Cotto, who dominated the early rounds, but was ultimately worn down and knocked out by the persistent Margarito.

“The strategy that Team Pacquiao, specifically Freddie Roach is trying to use of dehydrating the fighters or draining them will not work on this fight because Margarito can easily make 151-pounds catchweight,” Marco wrote.

“The smile and confidence on Pacquiao during the press conference was almost disrespectful to his opponent. Margarito will wipe the smile off of his face for sure when they step in the boxing ring at Cowboys stadium. Remember, the Pacman has never had someone who will move forward to him, everyone he fought was scared to push him back, Margarito fears no man in that ring and he runs from nobody.”

Outside of the pundits and the pencil pushers, Pacquiao’s old nemesis Juan Manuel Marquez has made a prediction on the fight. Marquez, who fought Pacquiao twice to a draw and a split decision loss (both controversial), also sees the speed of Pacquiao being the difference in the fight.

“Like Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, David Diaz, Miguel Cotto and Joshua Clottey before him, Margarito is expected to have a hard time coping up with Pacquiao’s quickness and ring savvy, according to Marquez,” wrote RCJ of GMA News.

“Never mind that he and Margarito are both of Mexican descent, but Marquez is definitely going to bet where the money is.”

The editors at Boxing Dispatch also see the fight going the way of Pacman. Margarito showed considerable rust in his last fight, against Roberto Garcia, and while it was only a tune-up, a jump from Garcia to Pacquiao is going to feel like moving from a soapbox derby to the Indianapolis 500. If we compare the Pacquiao-Margarito fight to the Cotto-Margarito fight, we have to factor in the speed of Pacquiao and the question of whether Margarito was hitting Cotto with what essentially amounted to a cast.

Pacquiao should bring Margarito down from an F5 tornado to a light breeze and we predict a knockout within 10 rounds.

Body of son of boxing promoter found in Cascades

SEATTLE -- Searchers spotted the body of the son of Hall of Fame boxing promoter Bob Arum on a rugged Washington state mountainside Friday afternoon, five days after they began looking for him in North Cascades National Park, authorities said.

The body belonging to John Arum, an experienced mountain climber, was seen from a National Park Service helicopter at about the 7,700-foot level of the 8,500-foot Storm King mountain, park spokeswoman Kerry Olson said.

Previous flights had been made in this area, but recent snow melt made it possible to locate the 49-year-old Seattle environmental attorney's body on Friday, she said.

It wasn't possible to either reach or retrieve the body, but Olson said it was clear to searchers in the helicopter that Arum was dead.

"There was no doubt of that," she said, adding it appeared that Arum had fallen.

The search began Monday after Arum failed to return from a solo weekend trip to scale the mountain, which is about 85 miles northeast of Seattle. Family members said the climb was part of Arum's goal of reaching the summit of the 100 highest peaks in the state.

"His plan was to climb Storm King on Saturday, so it's probably a safe assumption that he fell that day," Olson said.

Arum's larger backpack was found Wednesday on a trail on the mountain's less arduous south side, Olson said. The backpack was found at about 7,400-feet along a climbing route, and climbing gear was missing from the pack.

Climbers often take only essential gear to lighten their load while attempting a summit.

Arum's smaller pack was found higher on the mountain on Thursday, and Olson said his body was found about 300 feet below that spot in an extremely steep area with a lot of loose rock.

About 20 people, some using trained search dogs, were out earlier Friday, along with four helicopters, two of them King County sheriff's aircraft with heat-seeking equipment. Counting coordinators and support workers, about 50 people were involved in the search, Olson said.

National Park Service workers were trying to develop a plan to recover the body, which is in an area so difficult "that people can't rappel down or climb up to it," she said.

Friday's weather was clear, with temperatures in the 80s. However, the National Weather Service has forecast that clouds will move in with a chance of rain Saturday.

Earlier this week, Bob Arum left Los Angeles to join park rangers coordinating the effort. He had been on a three-city tour promoting the Nov. 13 fight between Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. His stepson, Todd duBoef, took over the tour that also stopped in New York and Dallas.

Dallas Pacquiao - Margarito presser was loud and crowded today

ARLINGTON, TX - About 15 TV cameras, hundreds of cameras and camcorders, a genuinely packed media section and maybe a thousand fans packed what is called the East End zone above the field at Cowboys Stadium for easily the biggest and loudest of the three press conferences to announce the Manny Pacquiao vs Antonio Margarito fight on November 13th.

The fired up crowd loudly booed Margarito as he was first escorted to the dais by a bevy of beautiful Cowboys Cheerleaders but the boos became cheers eventually as Margarito easily towered over Pacquiao by over fight inches in height when they posed facing each other.

Even the largely Mexican crowd cheered for Pacquiao as he was introduced and swept onto the dais by another team of gorgeous cheerleaders.

Many were there to see their heroes. Many were there for a picture with or an autograph of either fighter or anyone remotely famous.

The presser wasn't on the field as the first press conference for Pacquiao vs. Joshua Clottey back in January to kick off their March fight. But today's was where the presser was during fight week for Pacquiao vs. Clottey.

It probably had to do with NFL rules or at least because the landlord (the Dallas Cowboys) played a game last night and the field was in no condition to be converted to press conference form so quickly.

Top Rank president Todd DuBoef was the emcee of the event and he came prepared to turn the anti-Margarito fans into believers with information about the three-time champion they might not have known about. He did an exceptional job.

DuBoef was filling in for the second press conference for his step-father Bob Arum who left the media tour when it was discovered his eldest son, John, was missing from a hiking expedition in the Seattle area.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was there in the middle of everything and it was probably his idea to have the fighters wear white Cowboys jersey numbers 11 and 13 to signify November 13th as the date of the fight for everyone with a camera.

World Boxing Council Vice President Mauricio Sulaiman stood in for his father, Jose Sulaiman, (WBC President) and awarded gifts of belts and trophies to assorted dignitaries and commending the Texas commission for taking on such a controversial fight others passed on such as California.

Pacquiao stole the show with his poise and the graceful way he answered questions as the media was right in his face mostly asking questions he has answered many times before.

Both fighters stayed long after the questions to take pictures and sign posters and gloves for their fans.

Pacquiao-Margarito to be announced in Beverly Hills

MANILA, Philippines – The junior middleweight title clash between “Fighter of the Decade” Manny Pacquiao and “Tijuana Tornado” Antonio Margarito will be officially announced in Beverly Hills, California on Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila).

Pacquiao is expected to arrive in the US on Monday to sign the contract formalizing the deal.

The formal announcement of the fight is expected to take place the next day at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles.

The press tour will resume in New York City at the Chelsea Piers near the Hudson River on Wednesday before it wraps up at the Cowboys Stadium in Texas.

Pacquiao will return to Manila after the tour to begin his training camp together with his team, led by his boxing coach Freddie Roach.

The clash, which will take place at a catch weight between 147 to 154 pounds, is said to be for the World Boxing Council (WBC) junior middleweight title. The fight venue will be at the Cowboys Stadium.

Fight promoter, Bob Arum of Top Rank, said he expects greater interest in the Pacquiao-Margarito match compared with the Joshua Clottey fight.

“We have a lot of stuff that we didn't have for the Clottey fight. With Margarito being Hispanic, and this is North Texas, which has a huge Hispanic population, that will make this even bigger," Arum had said in a report posted on ESPN.com.

Pacquiao's World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title defense against Clottey drew 50,994 spectators, one of the largest in US history.

Aside from the Filipino champ’s popularity and the expected numbers from Margarito’s supporters, Arum said the on-going season of the National Football League (NFL) will also play a big part in the fight’s commercial successes.

"The last fight was not during football season. This one is, and we have all the Dallas Cowboys assets they use during the season to help this time,” said the veteran boxing promoter.

Aside from gate receipt earnings from the 50,994 spectators, the Pacquiao-Clottey fight generated 700,000 HBO pay-per-view buys and $35.3 million in US domestic television revenue.

The former king of welterweights shared with boxingscene.com his happiness after Texas gave him the green light to fight pound-for-pound champion Manny Pacquiao in the Lone Star State on Nov. 13.

Margarito, who turned 32 last March, welcomed the opportunity to go up against the giant-killer from the Philippines, and at the same time prove to everyone that he doesn’t need a loaded pair of hands to win.

Then he vowed to beat Pacquiao.

“I will beat Pacquiao,” said Margarito, at 5’11” more than four inches taller than Pacquiao.

Margarito was denied in his bid to regain his license in California last Aug. 18, and when he turned to Texas he was met with open arms. The decision to let him fight Pacquiao in Texas came the other day.

Margarito couldn’t hide his bitterness over the decision of the California State Athletic Commission to keep his hands frozen, following its revocation in February last year due to illegal hand wraps in a fight with Shane Mosley.

The Mexican warrior has only had one fight since then, a small one, and now he has the license to return to the big stage. In fact, no stage is bigger than when Pacquiao is on one corner, whoever he’s up against.

When he climbs the ring inside the $1.2 billion Cowboys Stadium, Margarito will try to prove a lot of people wrong.

“It’s unfair what they (the commission of California) did to me. I had to appear before them when their minds were already been made up.

“But now I’m happy because I have the fight with Pacquiao in my hands and because I have the opportunity to show that I am a clean fighter,” said Margarito.

“I thank Texas for giving me the license, for believing in me. I am going to prove that I don’t need anything forbidden to win my battles or past fights, including Miguel Cotto. But again, I’ll tell them, that when the date arrives I’m going to show them that I have what it takes to win. It’s a hard fight but I’m going to win.”

Pacquiao vs. Margarito: A cheater with a license, another catchweight and another title

The Texas State Athletic commission has granted a license to former world champion Antonio Margarito, or "Margacheato" as he is so affectionately referred to by some. This is despite the fact that California denied him the right to fight in their state. Now a fight between Pound-for-Pound king Manny Pacquiao and Margarito is a certainty.

The matchup is being heavily criticized. Many feel that it's wrong on several different levels.

1. Margarito is an (attempted) cheater and doesn't deserve the opportunity to fight Pacquiao.

Jose Silva of Lowell, Arkansas said, "They should really make an example of Margarito. He shouldn't be allowed to fight anymore. That would show boxers who are tempted to cheat what happens when you get caught."

Many boxing fans that I've spoken to agree with Silva on this point.

Dale Pippin of Seligman compared Margarito's attempted crime to the incident that occurred during the 1983 Louis Resto vs. Billy Collins Jr. fight. After Collins took a horrendous beating for 10 rounds, it was discovered that Resto's trainer Panama Lewis had removed some of the padding from his fighter's gloves. In 1986, Lewis and Resto were found guilty of assault, criminal possession of a weapon (Resto's hands) and conspiracy. Resto served 2 1/2 years in prison. He was never allowed to fight again.

Fast forward to January 24, 2009. Margarito was preparing to step into the ring with Shane Mosley. It was discovered that there was some hard, "Plaster of Paris" like strips in his handwraps. Hands were rewrapped, the fight went on, and Mosley preceded to beat Margarito half to death, stopping him in Rnd. 9. Margarito was suspended from boxing in the United States.

There is one clear difference in Resto and Margarito. Resto was caught after he cheated, while Margarito was caught before committing a crime. Margarito also maintains that he wasn't aware that anything was being placed in his handwraps by former trainer Javier Capetillo. Still, it is the opinion of many that Margarito should be banned from boxing for life. Instead, Margarito is being rewarded with a huge payday in a fight with the current king of boxing.

This is yet another black eye to the sport, and boxing afficianados ain't diggin' it. Yahoo boxing columnist, Kevin Iole recently penned "Margarito’s return should make fans nauseous". The respected scribe obviously isn't happy about the decision to give Margarito the opportunity to fight Pacquiao.

2. Manny Pacquiao is the "Catchweight King" and this is how he manages to beat bigger, stronger fighters.

At this point, Manny Pacquiao has only fought one fight at a catchweight. Did you get that? That's his grand total of catchweight fights. One. Uno. (1) He certainly doesn't deserve to be referred to as the "Catweight King".

Catchweights actually do serve a purpose. They sometimes allow fights to be made that otherwise wouldn't. Catchweights make it possible for a smaller fighter and a bigger fighter to compromise, and it should be noted that some great fights have been made as a result of this type of compromise.

Catchweights weren't invented by Manny Pacquiao or Bob Arum. They are nothing new.

In 1940, Henry Armstrong fought Law Jenkins at a catchweight of 140 for a welterweight fight. Sugar Ray Leonard vs Donny Lalond, Roy Jones Jr. vs Felix Trinidad, Jose Luis Castillo vs Diego Corrales and Julio Cesar Chavez vs Pernell Whitaker were all fought at catchweights.

Does Pacquiao actually need a catchweight for the Margarito fight? No.

Allowing Margarito to weigh in at 154 instead of 150 wouldn't change the outcome of the fight.

Tomasz Adamek weighed in a full 44 lbs lighter that Michael Grant last Saturday night. If Adamek wasn't worried about 44 lbs, Team Pacquiao doesn't need to be worried about 4.

The fact of the matter is that Pacquiao has never fought at light middleweight and even has to drastically increase his caloric intake during training just to keep from losing weight.

Margarito has fought at welterweight for most of his career, so making 150 lbs obviously won't be a problem for him.

3. How can this be a title fight for the vacant WBC light middleweight division when neither fighter has established himself in the weight class?

W.M. is a Pacquiao fan who asked not to be identified. He said, "I don't like it at all. I know for sure this is just a way to give Manny another title. I am 100% sure of this."

It is up to the sanctioning body to choose who deserves the honor of fighting for a vacant title, and while Pacquiao's acheivments are momentous, and Margarito is a former world champ, neither of them are actually light middleweights. There are plenty of fighters who have toiled in the light middleweight division who would love a chance to fight for that title.

Boxing fan Raye Santiago said, "To be honest, I want them to fight in 147 so there's no catch weight. They are both welterweights. it's just unfair to the other light middleweight contenders, but Manny just wants to fight who's being lined in front of him. We want Floyd but he doesn't seem interested as of now."

4. It is what it is, and fans will make the best of it.

Whether you agree or disagree about Margarito being Pacquiao's next opponent, the inclusion of a catchweight or the fight being a WBA title fight, the matchup itself is actually a pretty good one.

It's not Pacquiao vs. Mayweather, but it's Pacquiao vs. a strong, resiliant, hard-punching opponent. It's sure to be a tough night for both pugilists.

The fight will take place at Cowboy's Stadium in Dallas, where 50, 994 fans showed up last March 13 to witness the lackluster Joshua Clottey serve as Pacquiao's mobile punching bag for the full 12 rounds.

Bob Arum and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones are confident that Pacquiao - Margarito will far exceed the numbers of the previous bout.

Right or wrong, the fight is going to happen, and it's going to give Pacquiao the opportunity to fight for an 8th world title.

Boxing fans might as well sit back and enjoy the show.

It should be a good one.

Arum told Manila Bulletin and Fightnews that other tickets will be sold at $500, $300, $200, $100 and $50 for the fight to be held at the Cowboys Stadium in Dallas. These were the same prices when Pacquiao fought the last time in March against Joshua Clottey when he drew almost 51,000 spectators. Arum believes this fight will lure more than 70,000 fans since Margarito has a fan-base in Texas being Mexican and that the event will take place right smack in the (National Football League) season. “This is going to be a lot bigger than the March fight,” said Arum, who is in the final phase of his two-week European vacation. Arum will be back in the US in time for a three-city press tour that kicks off in Los Angeles on Tuesday. From Hollywood, the traveling circus’ succeeding stops would be New York and Dallas, where Texas billionaire Jerry Jones is rolling out the red carpet.

Top Rank Promotions has announced next week's press tour schedule for the Nov. 13, HBO pay per view televised clash between WBO welterweight (147 pounds) king Manny Pacquiao and ex-champ Antonio Margarito for the vacant WBC junior middleweight (154 pounds) title at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium.

On Tuesday at 11 a.m. Pacific Time, the fighters will be at the Beverly Hills Hotel's Rodeo Room. On Wednesday, at 11:30 a.m. Eastern Time, the conference will be at Chelsea Piers' Pier 60 in New York. On Friday, at 11:30 a.m. Central Time, the venue will be the Cowboys Stadium on its East end zone platform.

All three events are free and open to the public.

The 31-year-old Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 knockouts) will be after his eighth crown in as many different weight classes against the 32-year-old Margarito (38-6, 27 knockouts).

Mexican boxer Antonio "Tijuana Tornado" Margarito (38-6) was granted a boxing license in the state of Texas on Thursday, August 26, 2010. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation approved Margarito's application a week after the California State Athletic Commission voted 5-1 to revoke Margarito's license after illegal substance was found in the boxer's gloves prior to a January 2009 loss to Shane Mosley (46-6).

Margarito will now face pound-for-pound king Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao (51-3-2) on November 13 at billionaire Jerry Jones' $1.2 billion Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The fight could break the largest indoor crowd in boxing history, currently at 63,315 fans that attended Muhammad Ali vs Leon Spinks in 1978 at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans.

Pacquiao vs Joshua Clottey (35-4) drew over 50,000 at Cowboys Stadium on March 13 earlier this year. The Filipino icon is a -525 betting favorite. However, Margarito owns the record of having thrown the most number of punches in a 12 round bout in the history of boxing: 1,675. The Mexican hurled this many blows, 1,675 punches estimated by CompuBox, in a unanimous decision victory against Joshua Clottey in 2006.

Bubbly Bob Arum, jetting Thursday from the Italian Riviera back to Las Vegas, said Wednesday the Antonio Margarito-Manny Pacquiao fight to be held Nov. 13 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Tx., will draw more than 70,000 paying fans.

Some cynics might think that the North Texas area might not be as receptive as it turned out to be on March 13, when 51,000 showed up at the sparkling football playpen which houses Jerry Jones' NFL Cowboys team to watch Pacman trying to entice Johsua Clottey into an actual fight.

And some may think that genial host Jones might not have the same enthusiasm as he did when he forked over $7 million for Clottey-Pacman, especially since the November date is in the middle of football season.

Nay, nay, sayeth Arum, who is hoping for the official OK on Margarito's boxing license application on Friday.

“If anything, Jerry is even more enthusiastic. Look, we got a huge crowd with Clottey, a fighter nobody in North Texas knew anything about. Now we've got a Mexican fighter in an area with a big Mexican population. I think we can get north of 70,000 fans.

“Having this fight during football season also opens up all the marketing and other channels Jerry uses for the Cowboys, they will all be helping us with the promotion.”

Las Vegan Arum said he feels “bad” that the gambling city will not host a Pacqiauo bout this calendar year, mainly due to the Margarito licensing issues.

“I do feel bad, that is where I live. Las Vegas lives off gaming and a big Manny fight would have been a good financial injection for everyone. There's nothing like a big fight in Vegas but, at the same, I couldn't be more excited about going back to Jerry and to his stadium.”

Rashad Holloway speaks on trip to the Philippines and training with Pacquiao, Martirosyan and Chavez

While the 2010 calendar year hasn’t played out the way welterweight hopeful Rashad Holloway may have hoped it has still been full of learning lessons and crazy twists. Despite not having fought professionally in nearly a year Holloway still has immense hope for his future and understands that everything happens for a reason.

Holloway seemed to realize that some revisions were in order after his disappointing November draw to Frankie ‘Gato’ Figueroa and relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada from Los Angeles, California to work under the guidance of trainer and friend Eddie Mustafa Muhammad. The relocation was short-lived, however, as Holloway's time with Muhammad wasn't what he fully expected while also realizing how much he missed L.A. He would later link up with Freddie Roach and the two came to a common understanding and began working with one another.

Upon returning to California, Holloway has spent much time training at the Wild Card Gym and recently has been putting in work with former champion Sergio Mora at the fighter’s Montebello facility. The latest revelation with Holloway is that he will be making a trip to the Philippines with Roach and the trainer’s star fighter Manny Pacquiao next month to help the WBO champion prepare for his November 13th bout with Antonio Margarito.

“Freddie told me a week ago,” Holloway confirmed. “I was all for it. I can’t wait to go.”

Coming along with Holloway will be Jr. Middleweight prospect Vanes Martirosyan as well as Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. All three men will serve as the core group of Pacquiao’s sparring partners and the Filipino star should be able to get all the work he needs during the first portion of his camp in his native land.

Holloway has already sparred countless rounds with Pacquiao dating back to their time together for the champion’s training camp for his December 2008 battle against Oscar De La Hoya. While at the Wild Card, Holloway was able to get to know Pacquiao on a personal level as well as many of his countrymen who either trained at or visited the gym. That is one of the many reasons he is anxious to see the country on a first-hand basis.

“I get a lot of love from the Filipinos,” Holloway claimed. “When I was sparring Manny for the De La Hoya fight I swear I was on [GMA-7 news] every day. They’re just great people and they have always been good to me.”

Chavez Jr. has a reported December 4th clash with Miguel Cotto while Martirosyan will likely be seeing time on the undercard against once-beaten Poland native Pawel Wolak. As for Holloway, he claims that he will be seeing time on the Pacquiao-Margarito undercard but is dying to get in one more fight before his trek overseas.

“I was supposed to fight on September 18th in Las Vegas,” Holloway revealed. “It would have been on the Juan Manuel Lopez-Rafael Marquez undercard but that card got scrapped because Marquez got injured. I told Freddie that I need to have a fight before I leave for the Philippines because I don’t want to go into the November 13th card having been off a year.”

Holloway noted Roach is currently in Russia at the moment helping WBA Welterweight champion Vyacheslav Senchenko for his title defense against Charlie Navarro at the end of the month. When the trainer gets back to Los Angeles he will sit down with Holloway to eye possible options towards a stay-busy fight before the crew breaks for camp.

MANNY AND MAYWEATHER SOUND OFF

All the drama regarding Antonio Margarito’s ability to obtain a boxing license in Texas for his showdown with WBO welterweight titlist Manny Pacquiao is now over.

Moments ago (via telephone) Margarito’s trainer, Robert Garcia, confirmed to me that the fight is on for the November 13 rumble and the press tour to hype this clash has already been scheduled. The first stop on this buzz tour is slated for Monday, August 30 in Los Angeles and will extend to appearances on the east coast.

Now that the fight is happening, a couple of questions should be asked, “Should this fight be for a title fight and what has each fighter done lately to deserve a shot at this title?”

Though this fight is for the vacant WBC light middleweight title, neither man will weigh in at the 154-pound mark.

Garcia explains, “we are very happy to have this fight and I can tell you that the announcement will come out either tomorrow or Friday.”

“We will weigh in at 151 pounds and I believe that Manny (Pacquiao) will actually come in at around 149(lbs.),” Garcia adds, “but this is a good thing; we will be very strong and solid at 151 and I think that Manny will be good at 149 too. I just don’t want any excuses or people having a problem about the weight issue.”

Some people will and do have a problem with the weight topic. Many people believe that catch weights are a setback in boxing. Weight divisions have weight criteria. The practice of challenging other fighters at higher weight classes (let alone for the chance to fight for a world title in that weight division) yet coming in at lesser weight has become the norm of late.

This fight is an example of that “standard”.

How does one campaign or get ranked for a title in a division that he himself (Pacquiao) has not yet fought in?

How does his opponent (Margarito) get the chance to fight for the junior middleweight title when he has only fought once since 2004 in the 154-pound division and the person he fought recently was ranked 23 in the world?

In addition to having only one fight as a junior middleweight in the last six years, Margarito has been under suspension and suspicion since early 2009 when it was discovered that he had plaster in his hand wraps before entering the ring against Shane Mosley.

So what constitutes these two combatants being able to fight for a world title in a weight class that neither man has spent any or little time in as of late?

Is it because Manny is Manny and as Freddie Roach (Manny Pacquiao’s trainer) (in) famously stated that Margarito “has to feed his family and make a living”?

If this is true, others aren’t buying those reasons.

“Come on that’s a joke,” says Manny Steward, “he’s just saying whatever Bob Arum (chief of Top Rank Boxing) wants him to say.”

Steward believes that Roach has lost his way as a trainer and has become more of a promoter of sorts.

“He needs to be a trainer. Lately he’s (Freddie) been saying things that don’t sound like him; now its just like he thinks of the big paydays.”

I’m not sure I personally agree with this assessment, but I did find common ground to stand on with Steward when it came to the issue of catch weights.

“Catch weights should be looked at especially with Pacquiao,” he continued, “he has been fighting guys, but doesn’t weigh in at the weight limit that he challenges them at.”

“I think this should be addressed,” he said.

Another top-flight trainer agrees.

“154(pounds) is 154. Junior middleweight is junior middleweight. Period. Anyone saying anything different don’t know boxing,” said Roger Mayweather, trainer and uncle to undefeated pugilist Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Roger highlighted Manny Pacquiao’s famous conquests to solidify his position.

“He’s been fighting under weights that he challenges at. He didn’t fight Oscar (delaHoya), Ricky (Hatton), or Cotto (Miguel) at 147. He’s always weighing in less and had them drain their bodies to make weight. It’s like cheating.”

“Look. If you’re gonna challenge a mutherf*cker that’s in a higher weight class, then fight at the required weight or don’t challenge him at all and if you’re gonna fight for a title at a bigger weight class then respect that weight and title and fight at 154.”

“Catch weights don’t belong in title fights at all,” said Mayweather.

Aside from the catch weight subject, both Steward and Mayweather argue that Pacquiao and Margarito haven’t done much to earn the right to fight for a recognized belt.

“How is this a title fight? One guy aint fought in the division and the other guy’s been out serving a suspension for possible cheating and fought only once this year at 154,” explains Mayweather.

Steward offered his own assessment on the matter.

“This fight has one guy (Margarito) that has been out serving a suspension that has caused a lot of people to reevaluate his career wins; he hasn’t fought lately except for back in May against a guy that went 10 rounds with him and wasn’t an elite fighter either.”

Steward adds, “the other fighter, Manny (Pacquiao), hasn’t even fought at 154. So how is this a title fight? How are they even ranked to have this opportunity to win a title at junior middleweight?”

While addressing the upcoming battle between Margarito and Pacquiao, Manny detoured slightly from the debate at hand to comment on statements made by Freddie Roach regarding a rematch between Stewart’s charge, WBA super welter weight champion Miguel Cotto and Manny Pacquiao.

In their first and only meeting, Pacquiao stopped Cotto in the twelfth round of their WBO welterweight title collision. The referee stepped in after he saw that Cotto wasn’t fighting back and had already been dropped twice early in the fight.

Roach proclaimed that having Manny Steward in the corner of Cotto wouldn’t “make a damn bit of difference” in the outcome of the fight.

Roach went on to say that he would welcome a second fight between his fighter, Manny Pacquiao and Stewart’s pupil, Miguel Cotto.

“I would take another Cotto fight even with Steward in his corner in a heartbeat because it was that easy.”

Steward answered with, “ I tell it like it is. HBO and everyone knows this.”

“I’m not gonna say things for their (HBO and others) interests. I don’t do that sh*t.”

Steward finished by saying, “People need to remember when they are trainers. I know I do. He needs to think about the fights and what is fair and right and stop chasing paydays because now he’s (just) following through with what he is being told to say.”

In a final note during the interviews, both Mayweather and Steward stated that Manny Pacquiao would ultimately prevail against Antonio Margarito come fight night, but not before suffering some damage himself.

Said Steward, “this fight will be difficult for Manny, but he will win in the end. Margarito will give him a fight early, but the weight and ring rust will be a problem for him as the fight goes on.”

Mayweather chimed in, “the weight will beat Margarito. He aint fought but once in over a year. Manny will have a rough fight on his hands, but only for a little while early on.”

Roger concluded with a note of caution.

“Margarito was picked (be) cause he’s easy to hit and made for Manny. Its gonna make him look good fighting a bigger guy, but the guy is slow and drained. Either way, it’s a sh*t fight because neither mother f*cker has done anything to earn them the right to fight for this title in this weight class.”

Pacquiao’s training begins September 20

Manny Pacquiao will return to the gym starting September 20, eight weeks before he faces Antonio Margarito on November 13 in Dallas, assuming the Mexican slugger gets licensed in the state of Texas.

A decision on Margarito’s application for a license should be out by Thursday or Friday, in time for the kick-off of a three-city press tour on August 31 in Los Angeles.

Texas is expected to grant Margarito’s license even if Nevada and California had rejected his application since Margarito has already served his one-year suspension stemming from the illegal handwraps incident before a fight with Shane Mosley.

Two more promotional stops – in New York and Dallas – have been lined up by Top Rank chief Bob Arum and Texas billionaire Jerry Jones, whose $1.2 billion Cowboys Stadium will be the venue of the fight for the vacant World Boxing Council super-welterweight bout.

Reporting from the US, Mike Koncz, Pacquiao’s Canadian adviser, said the Filipino pound-for-pound king is scheduled to leave for Los Angeles this Sunday and will be joined by wife Jinkee, lawyer Franklin Gacal, training assistants Buboy and Roger Fernandez.

Koncz said Team Pacquiao will fly to New York on a commercial flight for another press conference on Wednesday, this time with Freddie Roach in tow.

From New York, Pacquiao will get on board a private jet en route to Dallas for the final media gig set Friday.

Koncz said that after Pacquiao winds up his promotional obligations in the Empire State, they will take a private plane bound for Los Angeles so they could catch the Philippine Airlines flight back to Manila set to leave 10 p.m.

A gym owned and operated by the Elorde family near West Avenue in Quezon City is being looked at as possible site of the first phase of Pacquiao’s preparation.

Scheduled to arrive in the country are Roach, conditioning coach Alex Ariza and sparring partners Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Rashad Holloway.

Antonio Margarito's request to have his boxing license reinstated by the California commission that originally revoked it when it was found he had plaster-caked inserts inside both of his hand wraps before a title fight last year was denied last week, with commissioners telling him they wouldn't consider his request again until next year.

Unlike California, Texas has the opportunity to profit from Margarito's next fight, to the likely tune of 75,000 people in Cowboys Stadium in a Nov. 13 super-welterweight title fight against the world's most popular boxer, Manny Pacquiao.

So although California didn't hesitate to give Margarito grief over a bundle of reasons, down to his lack of a sparring permit (a misstep the state doesn't enforce in other cases), Texas is poised to loosely reinstate Margarito without a hearing by the end of the week.

According to sources close to the negotiation, Texas authorities have all the information they need to reinstate Margarito in the form of a letter the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation's head of combat sports requested from the Assn. of Boxing Commissions.

In the four-paragraph letter, ABC President Timothy Lueckenhoff and other board members advised to state commissions that "Margarito has fulfilled his obligations" to appear before California before seeking a license elsewhere "and thus he is now free to pursue licensure with any ABC member commission. There is nothing under the federal law that would prohibit consideration for licensure."

Dickie Cole, Texas' program manager of combat sports, told The Times this week that in his personal opinion, "If a man serves his time for his crime, he's served his time and needs to be released."

Cole won't personally decide Margarito's fate, but he has worked behind the scenes to assist Margarito promoter Bob Arum and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones in their effort to place the fight in Texas.

Cole, 79, went further in defending Margarito's reinstatement, assessing that though Margarito broke rules forbidding the presence of foreign material in hand wraps, the tainted knuckle pads might have been there only to protect Margarito's hands.

"My personal opinion is what he had on his hands doesn't give you any advantage over an opponent," Cole said. "Do I personally think it'd help his hands or be detrimental to his opponent? No. It'd have no effect on his punching power. I wonder how many of those [California] commissioners ever had a hand wrapped before."

Cole noted that "the only gentleman on that committee who's been involved in boxing [John Frierson] voted to give [Margarito] the license. The others are just political appointees who don't really know the sport."

Cole's point is that Margarito would've gotten "spanked" in Texas too, but that he's been sufficiently punished by being held out of fighting in the U.S. for more than 17 months, "has a family to care for," and deserves to be reinstated because he's denied knowing the plaster inserts were inside his wraps in the first place.

"I'm not a policeman," Cole said, "but it appeared the evidence against him was weak. I don't think the kid is a bad person. Now, technically, he's legally able to fight here."

Margarito's team hasn''t sent a similar license request to Nevada. But for the sake of maintaining a positive relationship, Pacquiao's manager, Michael Koncz, had discussions Tuesday with MGM/Mirage officials and Keith Kizer, executive officer of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, to let them know Pacquiao is deeply appreciative of their past involvement in his fights.

"He told me Manny wants to fight in Las Vegas, and nowhere else," Kizer said.

Koncz said he realizes the fight against Margarito appears bound for Texas, but he wanted to express that, "Manny likes the city of Las Vegas, how they've always treated him well there, especially Mandalay Bay bending over backward for him. I can't force Margarito to apply here, but I've expressed Manny's thoughts, of how, if we had a choice, we'd fight here. But we have no complaints over Dallas."

Continuing the theme of this fight, Koncz was just playing politics.

Margarito's Licensing Decision For Pacquiao Expected Soon

A decision on whether or not to grant ex-champion Antonio Margarito a license to fight WBO welterweight (147 pounds) champion Manny Pacquiao on Nov. 13 at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium could be made as early as Thursday or Friday rather than the usual week-long process, according to a spokesperson for the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

The story was first reported by BoxingScene.com.

"We have received the license and a check for $20.00, which is the licensing fee. And it's currently under review. And, there's approximately three-to-four people who will review it," said Susan Stanford, public relations specialist for the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

"They [the reviewers] will be in licensing and in the compliance divisions," said Stanford. "Licensing normally takes on the average, 10 days, but I'm hoping to have either the license granted or denied on Thursday or Friday of this week."

Margarito (38-6, 27 knockouts) is scheduled to face Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 KOs) at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium for the vacant WBC junior middleweight (154 pounds) title.

Margarito has been unable to fight on American soil since his license was revoked by the California State Athletic Commission following a hand-wrapping scandal stemming from his ninth-round knockout loss to Shane Mosley in January, 2009.

Margarito, whose suspension ended on Feb. 11, tried to file for a license in Nevada, but was directed by that commission to return to the CSAC for a ruling, and was turned down, yet again, by the CSAC. Margarito was then free to apply at any of the other commissions, nationwide, with Texas being the first.

Dickie Cole, Texas' program manager of combat sports, told The Los Angeles Times that in his personal opinion, "If a man serves his time for his crime, he's served his time and needs to be released."

"We're looking forward to and hoping that Texas will issue a license. We fully expect that they willl. And we will then announce the press tour and the dates of the various cities," said Bob Arum, CEO of Top Rank Promotions.

"We expect to start next Tuesday in Los Angeles, and then do New York," said Arum. "And then make a stop off Thursday with Manny in Washington, D.C. with USA Today. They've asked us to visit with them. The last press conference will be in Dallas."

Unlike in other states, Margarito will not be required to endure a hearing before the licensing decision is made by Texas.

"There is no hearing. The way that we license people, it's either granted or denied," said Stanford. "Now if any licensee or applicant is denied a license, then they can ask for a hearing at that time. But the initial process does not require a hearing."

Stanford said that Margarito's case is the largest that her department has dealt with.

"My voice mailbox is full this morning. It quit at 12 voice mails. It's full at 12," said Stanford. "We haven't had to deal with anything this big since I've been here. I've been here for two years. It definitely is [the biggest.] I think we were prepared for it."

I would have ended up cutting him off and we would have been at this point just like we are right now, without communicating to each other, but I didn’t know."

Commissioner: "Well unfortunately we don’t have the luxury of what you would’ve done before. We do know what you did after, when you really had no choice. … Your attorneys work for you. Your trainer works for you. … The bottom line is, when you get in the ring, just like when you get a driver’s license, you can’t know some of the rules of the road and ignore others. You need to know them all."

Commissioner: "This commission is charged with the health, safety and welfare of other fighters. And I believe this may be a precedent-setting case. … I’m worried about the next fighter in the next fight who may be offered $250,000 or a million dollars or two million dollars for a fight. Margarito: "Yes, I do believe that you’re right. I believe that everybody has to be informed of everything that is happening in his or her surroundings. Chairman: "The permit thing about training in the gyms keeps coming up. And I wanna say this, it’s a good point, a very good point, and I know that because I read the rules. But I can guarantee you this: There’s not ten fighters fighting today that know that you can’t train under those rules. … You have 42 fights. And your hand wrapped was at least 42 times, let’s put it that way. And from experience, I do know this, it’s not like in the movies, or television movies, the hands are being wrapped a little at a time. It takes 15 or 20 minutes to wrap a hand. And you can feel it. After 5, 6, 7, maybe 8 wraps, and you punch the bag, and he’ll ask you, how’s that feel. … Having my hands wrapped many times, I knew that I could feel something. And that’s the issue that I have. … You keep saying that you didn’t feel it, you didn’t know anything about it. You may be true. But I think you should answer me on that one."

Margarito: "Had I hit something, then perhaps I would have felt something unusual. But I didn’t have a chance, I didn’t hit anything, and that’s why I didn’t feel — it didn’t feel tight, it didn’t feel that it was something bothering, or something that I could feel. I don’t know. I think that if I had had the chance to hit something, perhaps I could have felt it, but since I didn’t, I didn’t feel it."

Antonio Margarito: 'If You Grant Me a License, I Will Be So Grateful'

In the more than three hours of ex-world champion Antonio Margarito's reinstatement hearing Wednesday with the California State Athletic Commission, state attorney Karen Chappelle questioned why Margarito never apologized publicly despite his assertion that he unknowingly allowed his hands to be wrapped with an illegal substance by trainer Javier Capetillo. She also stated that Margarito has sparred illegally with trainer Robert Garcia in Oxnard, Calif., during his more than year-long suspension and revokation period.

Chappelle contended that Margarito had to prove his rehabilitation and remorse, saying "a boxer like Mr. Margarito makes a living with his fists," and, "knows what is in the wrappings that go on his fists."

Later, commission member, Eugene Hernandez, told Margarito that he was responsible for being "the CEO of your enterprise," adding, "your trainer works for you."

"I feel guilty for not knowing, and I'm glad that it was found, and I'm glad that I didn't go into the ring (with the wrappings on)," said Margarito. "If you grant me a license, I will be so grateful. But if not, then so be it."

Margarito has not been able to fight on American soil since his license was revoked by the CSAC following an illegal hand-wrapping scandal in January, 2009. The illegal wraps, found to have a hardened, plaster-like substance inside, were removed and confiscated prior to Margarito's ninth-round knockout loss to Shane Mosley.

Margarito, whose suspension officially ended on Feb. 11, is coming off of May's 10-round unanimous decision over Roberto Garcia in a junior middleweight clash in Mexico.

Margarito unsuccessfully applied for a license in Nevada, whose state athletic commission ruled that he must reapply in California and have his case re-tried there before attempting to fight in Las Vegas.

The 32-year-old Margarito (38-6, 27 knockouts) is in line to face seven-division titlist and WBO welterweight (147 pounds) champ Manny Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 KOs) on Nov. 13 at the Cowboys Stadium, where Pacquiao will pursue his record eighth crown in as many different weight classes with the WBC's vacant junior middleweight (154 pounds) crown being on the line.

Asked by Chappelle if he had apologized in public for the incident, Margarito answered, "No."

"But that's what I am here for," said Margarito. "I am here to not only answer your questions, but also to make an apology to the commission and to the entire world for not knowing what was in the wrappings."

Citing CSAC rules, Chappelle said Margarito, while suspended, was not legally allowed to be training for the Roberto Garcia bout without a state permit -- as the fighter acknowledged doing with Robert Garcia.

Margarito said that he was unaware that he was violating the rules.

"I did not know that I needed the permit for sparring and for training," Margarito said through an interpreter. "I did know that I needed permission for a professional fight, but not for sparring purposes. Had I known that, I wouldn't have done it."

Later, commission chairman, John Frierson, said he did not believe that even "10 boxers" in California knew of the sparring permit rule.

Margarito said that he has not yet trained for the Pacquiao fight in America, but that he was doing so "alone" near his home in Tijuana, Mexico. Margarito has repeatedly denied knowledge that his then-trainer, Capetillo, placed an illegal substance in his wrappings.

Promoted by Top Rank Promotions, Margarito is being represented by senior attorney Daniel Petrocelli of the Los Angeles-based O'Melveny and Myers law firm. Petrocelli is the same man who gained a wrongful death civil conviction against O.J. Simpson in 1997.

Petrocelli said that as part of Margarito's recovery and change in attitude, Margarito has severed ties with Capetillo, hired Garcia, and assured that Garcia will wrap Margarito's fist only in the presence of the fighter "so that Antonio can personally oversee the procedure for himself."

Petrocelli said that prior to the events of last year, Margarito fought in 42 fights -- 15 of which were title bouts -- and had a spotless disciplinary record and was never accused of cheating. "You're not dealing with a repeat offender," said Petrocelli.

Margarito acknowledged to Chappelle that "anything that is in the wraps that is illegal would be cheating and an unfair advantage," adding, "I did not know [about the illegal wrappings]. I'm not arguing with you. I'm being completely honest with all of you. That's why I broke my relationship with Capetillo. It was hard to do, but that's what had to be done."

ABS-CBN Las Vegas correspondent Bev Llorente reported that a pearl necklace also from the Philippines was auctioned off for $1,250. The funds raised are for the benefit of the Nevada Cancer Institute .

The Philippines candidate Maria Venus Raj personally auctioned off the prized item from her home country just like the other 82 contestants in a show hosted y KSNV Channel 3 personality Alicia Jacobs and featuring current Miss Universe Stefania Fernandez.

The Miss Philippines winner auctioned off the signed gloves along with a photo of the congressman representing the lone district of Sarangani signing the gloves as a form of authentication in an affair which, according to Llorente took some two hours.

Prior to her departure the Miss Universe candidate paid a courtesy call on Pacquiao, the national sports hero who advised Maria Venus Raj "you must be confident. Just think you are in the Philippines. There are many of our countrymen there who will support you. I will call our friends who are there to help you."

The ABS-CBN correspondent reported that several Filipinos had traveled from across the United States to attend the affair and to show their support for Miss. Philippines with tickets costing $100. She also said that Raj received a lot of attention from the international media “not because of the items she auctioned off but because of her standout appeal.”

The roommate of Maria Venus Raj, Miss Malaysia Nadine Ann Thomas described the Filipina beauty as “a true sweetheart and a very down to earth person.” The Miss Universe coronation night will be held on August 23.

“The world will see a different Margarito this time around. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to change him completely. “Garcia added, “If Manny wants to go to war, we will help him get his wish. Our focus is to box, but we are ready for a war if Manny wants to go there.”

In speaking with Top Rank boss, Bob Arum, he sized up the fight to me by saying, “John, Margarito will be the toughest and biggest guy Manny has ever fought plain and simple. That being said, the question that will be answered on fight night is going to be if Manny’s ability to fight with both hands and work his quick foot work be enough to overcome Antonio’s strength and heart?”

Many people believe that Margarito hasn’t proven himself worthy of winning the Pacquiao sweepstakes none more so than WBA super welterweight king Miguel Cotto’s newest trainer, Manny Steward.

In a phone conversation with me, Steward blasted Arum’s decision to pick Margarito as Pacquiao’s next opponent. “This fight shouldn’t be happening, John. Margarito got caught with loaded gloves and isn’t even licensed to fight. Bob (Arum) has his own agenda. It’s obvious. This fight should be judged by the fans and the media should question the validity of this poor decision.”

I agree with Steward’s views on the making of this fight, but I also believe his verbal venom is tainted since he has a stake in Cotto’s career.

Frankly, I don’t see this fight as being too competitive in the end. It’s no secret that Margarito has never had much side to side movement, and he has been fighting for too long to learn anything new. Margarito is Margarito. Much like Erik Morales, Israel Vazquez, and Rafael Marquez to name a few, they may preach and even want to show they can box, but in the end all it takes is one solid hit landed by their challenger and strategy goes out the window.

Margarito’s trainer said it best, “I don’t want see Antonio take three hits to give one. I want him to move his head and hands more.” Garcia added, “I want him to make Manny miss and make him pay, but Margarito is who he is and will always want to beat on somebody by going to war.”

I couldn’t have summarized this fight better myself Mr. Garcia. I have Pac winning by late stoppage.

Manny Pacquiao is the most popular boxer in the world today. Many fighters call him out from featherweights to light middleweights because they know fighting him will give them a big payday. People can say that Floyd Mayweather is the most famous but he is only famous in America, Pacquiao is famous worldwide.

Recently, Juan Manuel Marquez, someone that Manny Pacquiao faced at featherweight and superfeatherweight, called Manny out after he defeated Juan Diaz on HBO.

I have to say, that in my view, I would much rather see Juan Manuel Marquez fight Manny Pacquiao in November, rather than, giving Antonio Margarito a shot at a big payday with Manny.

Marquez looked very sharp against Juan Diaz and he would give Manny Pacquiao an amazing fight. The two have a big history together and a third match is something that could easily be sold with an HBO 24/7. The Mexican and Filipino boxing fans like Marquez and they like Pacquiao and since Marquez has also fought Floyd Mayweather Jr., they can add that to the intrigue and build up of the fight.

I fear that Bob Arum making a fight with Antonio Margarito will make the sport of boxing come under a lot of fire. A lot of Filipino fans are saying Margarito should be given a chance but I beg to differ, now that I think about it, it is not proper.

In boxing , using illegal handwraps is the ultimate “No No”, putting plaster on the wraps is almost like you are attempting to murder your opponent with concrete fists as weapons.

The Pay-per-view will truly suffer if Bob Arum makes a fight with Antonio Margarito and Manny Pacquiao.

Look at the boxer Luis Resto, he ended the career of another Bob Arum fighter, Billy Collins Jr., by using plaster on his handwraps. Luis Resto’s trainer, Panama Lewis, applied the plaster before the fight that ended Collins boxing career. Resto claimed that he didn’t know what was put in his gloves by Lewis but later he admitted he knew that Panama Lewis was loading his gloves.

We shouldn’t approve of this type of fight because it will just make boxing look bad. That is why I prefer to see Pacquiao vs. Marquez in a third fight. Marquez deserves a shot and he is an honest man, who never cheats and proved that he really wants the fight with Pacquiao.

Also, this time around, they can truly settle the score of who really won. Marquez will not demand a 50-50 split of the money, Pacquiao can get a bigger share since he is the true star in boxing.

I don’t think we should boycott a Antonio Margarito vs Manny Pacquiao fight but I think we should have our voices heard that we prefer a more worthy opponent for Manny Pacquiao.

Mayweather exposed as chicken

HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg released a four-paragraph, five-sentence statement Monday which cast doubt upon the veracity of Floyd Mayweather Jr.; Mayweather’s best friend, Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe; Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya and Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer and which forever eliminated any doubt about Mayweather’s intention: He’s ducking Manny Pacquiao.

There can be no other rational explanation.

Welcome to “Mayweather in Wonderland,” where they try to convince you that up is down, the grass is blue and the sky is green. Never mind that Mayweather has tarnished, perhaps forever, his legacy as one of the best boxers of all time. Given his disinclination to fight Pacquiao, it’s hard to regard him as the best fighter of his own time.

Mayweather was nowhere to be found on Monday, still on vacation, apparently oblivious to the millions of boxing fans desperate to hear a word about his intentions. If Mayweather cared about his legacy, if he cared about the sport that has made him rich and famous, he wouldn’t have been invisible the last few weeks while allowing Ellerbe to spew a lot of mumbo jumbo.

Mayweather and his cronies attempted to insinuate that Top Rank chairman Bob Arum was being deceitful when he said he’d been negotiating for a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight with Greenburg serving as the middle man. Greenburg and Arum have not had the strongest of relationships, while Greenburg has an extraordinarily cozy relationship with Golden Boy. If Arum were lying, their frequently contentious history together suggests that Greenburg would have called him on it immediately.

Greenburg, though, clearly sided with Arum, when he said, in part, “I had been negotiating with a representative from each side since May 2nd … “

That’s what Arum, who promotes Pacquiao, has steadfastly claimed for weeks. On June 30, Arum told Yahoo! Sports that “all issues were resolved” and that the only outstanding matter was whether Mayweather wanted to fight in 2010 or 2011. Arum then set a July 16, 11:59 p.m. deadline on Mayweather to accept the deal. On a conference call in the early morning hours of July 17, Arum announced the deadline had passed without word from Mayweather and that he was pursuing a fight for Pacquiao with either Antonio Margarito or Miguel Cotto.

Ellerbe, though, released a statement on July 19 that was the beginning of the end for Team Mayweather’s credibility. Ellerbe disputed that talks had even taken place. “Here are the facts,” the statement read. “Al Haymon, Richard Schaefer and myself speak to each other on a regular basis and the truth is no negotiations have ever taken place nor was there ever a deal agreed upon by Team Mayweather or Floyd Mayweather to fight Manny Pacquiao on November 13. Either Ross Greenburg or Bob Arum is not telling the truth, but history tells us who is lying.”

That led many in the media to quickly assail Arum’s credibility and for Schaefer and De La Hoya to issue self-righteous comments backing Ellerbe and denying negotiations had ever taken place.

And they would have won this silly game had it ended there and had Greenburg not entered the fray. Arum insisted he was telling the truth, but few seemed to believe him. They didn’t, that is, until Greenburg released his brief, simple, but truly remarkable statement.

In it, he said, “Fights like Mayweather vs. Pacquiao are significant because of these fighters’ ability to connect with sports fans around the world. It’s unfortunate that it won’t happen in 2010. I had been negotiating with a representative from each side since May 2nd, carefully trying to put the fight together. Hopefully, someday this fight will happen. Sports fans deserve it.”

Here’s what sports fans deserve: They deserve better than to waste their hard-earned money on “Money,” who acts as if he’s invented the sport. Mayweather’s a brilliant talent who never seems to let one forget it, who behaves as if he should be able to dictate terms and others should gratefully accept it because he said so.

Let him play in his fantasy world. Boxing doesn’t need him. And, truth be told, he’s wrong about his value.

Mayweather has sold more pay-per-views against common opponents than Pacquiao and his gates for those fights have been bigger. But Pacquiao’s Nov. 14 bout with Cotto at the MGM had a far greater economic impact upon the city of Las Vegas than either of Mayweather’s and the Nevada Gaming Control Board attributed casinos’ best performance in 22 months in November 2009 to the presence of the Pacquiao-Cotto bout and the high-rolling Asian gamblers who spent loads of money.

Despite apparently being caught red-handed when Greenburg released his statement, Ellerbe’s only response on the record was, “I hear his statement and I stand by my statement.” But he then attempted to insinuate that comments Mayweather made at a June 2 Make-a-Wish event in Las Vegas should have been taken by the media that he never planned to fight Pacquiao this year.

“At this particular time, Floyd Mayweather is taking probably a year off, a couple of years off from the sport of boxing,” Mayweather said at the charity event. “I don’t really know what the future holds for Floyd Mayweather at this particular time, but I’ll probably take a couple of years off.”

Saying one “probably” is going to take a year off is a lot different than releasing a statement or holding a media conference and announcing one’s retirement. Yet, Ellerbe attempted to intimate that Mayweather’s statement to sports director Chris Maathuis of KLAS-TV in his gym at a charity event was a definitive announcement.

What muddied the waters even more was De La Hoya apparently lying to Univision on June 11. In a televised Spanish-language interview, De La Hoya said of a potential Mayweather-Pacquiao fight, “I think right now we are very, very close in finalizing the contracts. I can’t talk right now in detail about the negotiations but I will say that we are very close.”

The comments caused quite a stir when they were made, but Schaefer dismissed them. He insisted De La Hoya had been misquoted. But when those pesky reporters actually went and had Spanish experts translate the recording, it turned out that De La Hoya wasn’t misquoted.

So the Golden Boy tried a different tactic on Monday. He told Robert Morales of BoxingScene.com, “I think I said it because I get the question so many times that, obviously, I was fed up and tired of it and I just said like, ‘Yeah, yeah, it’s gonna get made.’ ”

Essentially, De La Hoya on Monday admitted to lying on June 11, though it’s uncertain how his June 11 comments would have helped end the questioning he wanted to avoid. Given that he said a deal was close, that would only seem to make the scrutiny greater, no lesser. Had he said there were no talks – which he’s now insisting is the truth – and that the fight was not going to happen, no one would have had reason to keep asking him.

No one is going to ask any more. How can anyone support someone with Mayweather’s arrogance, who cares so little about the fans who made him rich beyond his wildest dreams that he won’t even consider the fight they want more than any other?

Mayweather has run from his biggest challenge. The fans, even those who have ardently supported him through the years, will surely remember that. And the next time he dares to compare himself to one of boxing’s all-time greats, such as Sugar Ray Robinson or Sugar Ray Leonard, they’ll scoff.

He can’t hold a candle to either.

NO MAYWEATHER-PACQUAIO? PLEASE!!

There are 100 million reasons why this fight should take place. Can some one explain to me how Manny Pacquaio and Floyd Mayweather not agree to fight? We are talking millions and millions and millions; did I mention that we are talking millions?

This whole affair show the weakness of boxing in which promoters control the sport and if they don’t agree or even like each other, then no fight. Analyst Max Kellerman made an interesting point after Tim Bradley's HBO fight when he observed that Golden Boy fighters fight Golden boy fighters and Top Rank fighters fight Top Rank fighters.

Bradley, who is neither a Golden Boy Fighter nor a Top Rank Fighter, will not be part of any future fight plan with either Manny or Floyd. (The good news for Bradley and boxing fans, Devon Alexander, the other excellent junior welterweight is not either a Golden Boy or Top Rank fighter, so he just might be available for Bradley, but it is a fight that is not yet a big money maker.) Manny is now rumored to fight Antonio Margarito after the negotiations with Mayweather fell through.

There are many reasons why Mayweather-Pacquaio should go forward and I should say 100 millions reasons for this fight to go forward, but boxing is not a sport always govern by common sense or even sound economics.

For Mayweather, he is a wealthy fighter and he can wait since he has shown that he can beat smaller fighters even with layoffs. As for Pacquaio, he has his options provided by Bob Arum who wants something better for his fighter, but there is one reality; in 2010, this fight is a big fight.

In 2011, it may not be as big since other fighters are now making their own move toward popularity. The Super Six is producing new stars in the two Andres, Ward and Dirrell and Amir Khan of England may be a super star in his own right. There are other young fighters making their own statements.

So Pacquaio-Mayweather will compete with other stars for attention and PPV money. The public is tiring of the negotiations between the two and just wondering, do you guys really want to fight each other?

In boxing, timing is everything and one loss or bad fight from either fighters and you see millions of dollars down the drain and Oscar De La Hoya and Bob Arum asking themselves, what the ---- happened?

One boxing pundit observed that Mayweather does not like to be dictated to and never said that he would fight again this year. He added that Mayweather views himself bigger than the sport and his arrogance is misplaced.

Mayweather is a very good fighter, hell, he is a great fighter but he is not bigger than the sport. Mayweather may view himself the king of the sport but the reality is that when it comes to being the main attraction, he has found himself to be second banana to others in the past.

Against Arturo Gatti, Ricky Hatton and even Oscar De La Hoya, Floyd Mayweather was not the star attraction but the second banana in a play in which he was the superior fighter but not the superior gate attraction.

Over the years, many have finally decided that Mayweather may be worth the 50 bucks but let be blunt a Mayweather-Cotto does not carry the same weight as Mayweather-Pacquiao.

Cotto at this stage in his career is a very good fighter but a fighter beginning the downside of his career after fighting so many wars. And he is not the elite fighter in Mayweather's or Pacquaio's class.

Pacquaio already demonstrated that fact when he defeated Cotto and I don’t see Cotto beating Mayweather.

As for Margarito, he may not be able to get a license in the United States and the fight between Pacquaio and the hands of plaster may end up in Mexico and does Arum want his prize fighter fighting a Mexican fighter in Mexico?

This is a big gamble for Arum and for Pacquaio.

Who really is going to pay 50 dollars to watch Mayweather whip up on Cotto? That will be a tough sell no matter what. Let be blunt, Pacquaio best fight for both legacy and money is Mayweather and Mayweather's best fight for both legacy and money is Pacquaio.

The promoters lucked out once when their guys won key fights last spring. Mayweather dispatched Shane Mosley and Pacquaio easily defeated Clottey but luck can easily run out.

For Pacquaio, he might have the PPV advantage with Margarito who is coming back from suspension but Margartio is capable of beating Pacquaio. So Arum may find himself with a dilemma in which one of his stable fighters upset a 100 million plus dollar pay day for his star attraction.

Is it a gamble worth taking?

If Pacquaio manages to beat Margartio and Mayweather pounds Cotto, then the gamble will pay off worth millions. And there will be no excuses that can be use to keep this fight from ever happening.

Of course there is no excuse that this fight is not happening in 2010. Boxing will survive Mayweather not fighting Pacquaio, but it does show the weakness of a sport that can’t manage to get two of its biggest attraction in the ring.

Just when you think you see it all, well, you find that you haven’t.

Again, can some one explain to me how Manny Pacquaio and Floyd Mayweather not agree to fight? We are talking millions and millions and millions; did I mention that we are talking millions?

Manny Pacquiao-Antonio Margarito to Boardwalk?

Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall is one of three U.S. sites promoter Bob Arum is considering for the Manny Pacquiao-Antonio Margarito junior middleweight title fight Nov. 13.

MGM Grand in Las Vegas and Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, are considered Arum's top two choices, but sources close to the situation believe Boardwalk Hall has become a viable alternative because executives at Arum's Top Rank Inc. think New Jersey's State Athletic Control Board would approve Margarito's application for a license to box in this state. Haledon native Nick Lembo, general counsel for the SACB, declined comment Tuesday because Margarito has yet to submit an application.

The California State Athletic Commission suspended Margarito for a year in February 2009 because he was caught in his dressing room trying to use illegal hard pads in his hand wraps prior to his ninth-round technical knockout loss to Shane Mosley in Los Angeles.

Margarito, 32, hasn't boxed in the United States since Mosley dominated him in January 2009 at Staples Center. The former welterweight champion returned from a 15-month layoff May 8 and beat Roberto Garcia by unanimous decision in a 10-round fight in Aguascalientes, Mexico.

Margarito hasn't applied for a license in the United States since the suspension, but Arum hopes to get Margarito's license request on the agenda for the Nevada State Athletic Commission's Aug. 9 meeting. The NSAC voted, 4-1, in favor of tabling Margarito's license request July 9, and requested that Margarito first apply for a license in California.

The CSAC won't convene again until September, however, and might not review a license application from Margarito unless Margarito drops a lawsuit against the CSAC for suspending him without due process. Margarito needs to get licensed somewhere soon because Top Rank must start selling tickets and promoting the pay-per-view card headlined by Pacquiao-Margarito by next month.

Arum also is considering Monterrey, Mexico, but only if Margarito cannot get a license to box in New Jersey, Nevada or Texas.

Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 KOs) will fight Margarito (38-6, 27 KOs, 1 NC) because Floyd Mayweather Jr. (41-0, 25 KOs) wasn't interested in opposing Pacquiao on Nov. 13. A Pacquiao-Mayweather match would crown boxing's mythical pound-for-pound champion, earn each boxer more than $30 million and probably become the most lucrative event in boxing history, but negotiations for the fight have fallen apart twice this year.

The Truth of Manny Pacquiao – Floyd Mayweather JR: The Bob Arum Deception

One would think that trial and error is usually the best teacher. Even, if you are an architect, building a house or a carpenter, designing cabinets; without a blueprint or a design to follow, you are bound to make some mistakes. That is why it is important to follow the necessary steps to prevent making costly mistakes.

Bob Arum, Manny Pacquiao’s promoter has been promoting fights for many, many decades. If anyone should have the blueprint on putting together a fight, it should be him. Arum promoted some of the biggest fights in the 70’s and 80’s. He knows promoting, as good as most preachers know The Bible. This is how he gained all of his riches, and boy is he loaded.

I must admit he is the best at what he does. Arum has mastered the promoting game. Floyd “Money” Mayweather knows him better than anyone, because he was once promoted by him. Their departure was very bitter. And, what they both seem to have in common is—they are all about the buck. No kidding.

Arum knew just what to offer Floyd Mayweather, JR., to turn him off. He truly knows what offer Floyd would take, and what offer he would turn down. Remember, Arum knows Floyd very well. When Bob Arum is truly ready for “The Big Fight” to happen (Mayweather vs. Pacquiao), he knows what to do. This is what he does for a living. He is not quite ready for this match up.

Team Mayweather’s response was just the way he hoped it would be. First of all, he gives Floyd a deadline on negotiations. Floyd had just come off one of the biggest wins of his career in the Shane Mosley wipeout. And when we talk pay per view numbers, the dude is king… “Money” Mayweather has demonstrated time and time again that he “put butts in seats,” when it comes to selling a fight.

Arum knows as long as he can keep “Money” Mayweather away from Manny Pacquiao, his stock will continue to rise. Right now the only fighter that poses a real threat to Pacquiao is “Money” Mayweather. Arum knows that if, and when that fight happens, Floyd could end up beating Manny so bad, that his stocks will plummet over night. Arum is not ready for that to happen. Millions of dollars on top of millions would go down the drain. That would be Arum’s worst nightmare.

Okay, know that the chess game favorites Arum, he can place Manny Pacquiao in fights that he can win and also have the pleasure of promoting both fighters. Remember, he promotes Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito, whose boxing privileges will probably be re-granted in the weeks to come. He has already made it known that Pacquiao will be fighting one of these guys on November 2010. These two fighters will allow Arum to maximize the most profit with very little risk. Bob Arum is a lot smarter than we give him credit for. He has this whole thing all planned out and it’s going just as planned.

With Team Mayweather watching from the sidelines, Arum now has both Jerry Jones and his new Cowboy Stadium in Texas, and MGM Casino of Las Vegas as the home of Pacquiao’s next fights. The highest bidder of the two will probably get his next bout. As Jim Lampley would say “That’s some colorful stuff.”

After the dominating performance “Money” Mayweather displayed over Shane Mosley, tell me what promoter would want to jeopardize the legacy of his fighter, when he can gain more by fighting this guy on a later date? The writing was on the wall when, I heard from several sources, that Arum did not contact Team Mayweather at all during negotiations. Instead all negotiations went through the president of HBO Sports Ross Greenburg.

According to Arum, weeks ago negotiations were going well with Team Mayweather, however, now we know that was just speculations. The results we the boxing fans have received from the news of “The Big Fight” have gone just the way Bob Arum planned it. He really wants no parts of “Money” Mayweather right now. Too early, just not part of the plan right now. Arum will deal with “Money” Mayweather when the time is right for him, not the fighters or the fans.

With old-father time knocking at the door, maybe Arum is about to make his own departure in the sport of boxing and have two to three fights in mind for Manny Pacquiao with “Money” Mayweather being the last on the list. Once again I will repeat myself and say “If Bob Arum wanted “The Big Fight,” to take place now, he knows just the kind of offer to present to Floyd, with the agreement of Manny and the fight would be on—just that simple!

Arum knew just what would tick “Money” Mayweather off, and it did. Floyd felt so disrespected by Arum, he refused to say anything. It silenced him! That was wisdom at its best. Sometimes the best answer is to “say nothing.” Bob knew if he pissed of Team Mayweather, it would buy him more time to put together the other fights he had in mind before “The Big Fight.” With Bob Arum, its nothing personal against the fans, “it’s all about the Benjamins.”

I guess if you look at things from a seasoned promoters prospective, whom seen his younger days as a promoter “if it don’t make big money, it don’t make sense.” Arum knows that the biggest fight to be made in boxing is Floyd and Manny. Worst case scenario, even if both of these fighters should lose their very next fight, they still would be a big attraction facing each other, fans would still buy that fight, so Bob’s Arums point is—what’s the rush?
